Outdoor Rec Afterschool Program

$175/month | Transportation from the school campus is provided!
Pickup for the Sailing and Rowing Center at 6pm
This is an after-school program hosted by Outdoor Rec where kids ages 7-14 can receive assistance completing homework and be rewarded with a myriad of outdoor activities including fishing, crabbing, cast net throwing, kayaking/SUP, archery, disc golf, rock climbing, and learn basic salt marsh ecology from our two Master Naturalist instructors, Nate Skager and Kat McMenamin. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to earn Merit Badges throughout the spring and fall months. Merit badges will be awarded to those participants who demonstrate proficiency in fishing, cast net throwing, kayaking & SUP, and archery. Once a participant is awarded all Merit Badges, they will have an opportunity to earn the Junior Naturalist Merit Award! The Junior Naturalist will not only be proficient in all the skills listed above, but also knowledgeable in basic salt marsh ecology, fish identification, salt marsh inhabitants, tides, and more! A snack will be provided and transportation from Rec Center via minibus will be provided as well.
Nate & Kat will be leading this program. Both instructors are Lowcountry Master Naturalists and have been leading ecotours both on land and on water for a combined 40 years.
Middle School: Thursday, 4-5:30pm* | $50
High School: Wednesday & Friday, 4-5:30pm* | $100

Disc golf is soaring in popularity, and joining a team is a fantastic way to get involved in this dynamic sport. With professional coaches to guide you, players can rapidly improve their skills and enjoy the camaraderie of team play. The sport offers a blend of physical activity, strategic thinking, and fun that's hard to beat. Our high school club will develop physical fitness as well as valuable life skills like teamwork and discipline with the chance to travel for tournaments to add an exciting dimension to the game. Whether you're a beginner or looking to sharpen your throws, there's a place for you in the disc golf club. So grab your discs, and let's hit the courses at Mid Island Tract for some flying fun!

Whether this is your first time stepping on a skateboard or you are already dropping in on a half pipe, the After-School Skateboarding Club offers professional instruction for all skill levels! Parents have the option of dropping their child directly to Bristol Sports Arena by 4pm or we can transport your child from the Rec Center at 3:45pm in our mini-bus. If your child is taking the mini-bus, the Lower School students will be escorted to the Rec Center by one of our Rec Staff members where they can finish any homework. Middle School participants will need to walk over to the Rec Center by 3:30pm. A Rec Staff member will then transport your child to the skate park in our mini-bus by 4pm. Skateboard, helmet and pads are all provided at the park at each session. Pickup is located at the Bristol Sports Arena Skate Park by 6pm.
Led by Maxcy Hicks and Abbey Caporuscio
Abbey brings a wealth of experience as an accomplished skater who has served as an instructor at Woodward Skate Camp.
Maxcy has been skating his entire life and has competed in and won several skate competitions throughout his career. He was sponsored by Fuel Skate Team and has led multiple Skate Demos and has showcased his skills at various Skate Park Openings and Trade Shows as a Fuel Skate Team member. Maxcy also played an integral role in designing and developing Hilton Head's first skate park.

Climbing Wall at the Island Rec Center
*child must be between 40-300lbs
The Island Rec Center offers an exciting opportunity for young climbing enthusiasts with its Climb Club. With a maximum capacity of 15 participants, the club ensures personalized attention and safety for each climber. Attendees will have the chance to learn and hone their climbing and bouldering skills on a 20-foot rock wall, designed to challenge and engage climbers of all levels. This is a fantastic way for kids to build strength, confidence, and problem-solving skills, all while having fun and making new friends. Kids must wear sneakers to participate.
*Climb Club will not be held on Thanksgiving Day or Halloween
Led by Kathleen McMenamin and Nate Skager, each having climbing and bouldering experience of a combined 10 years.
